Hail pounded Cheyenne Zoo to reopen Saturday; two additional animals have died.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, pounded by a fierce hail storm on Monday, which injured guests and killed zoo animals, announced plans to reopen Saturday.

The zoo also disclosed two more animal deaths due to the storm: a meerkat and peacock.

“The meerkat pup that was missing underground has not been recovered, and is assumed to have passed away from the storm,” Zoo officials said in a news release. “One of our peacocks also passed due to hail injuries. The peacock was known as Snoop.”

The meerkat pup was from a recent litter and had not yet been named. All other animals injured are improving or stable, officials said. Daisy, a 4-year-old muscovy duck, and Motswari, a 13-year-old cape vulture, were also killed during the hailstorm.

On Wednesday, 101 guest cars that are not driveable remained in the parking lot. If damaged cars remain in the lot at 5 p.m. Thursday they will be towed to the south end of the zoo’s lot “without security monitoring,” the zoo said.
